British advertised salaries fall but job ads pick up: Adzuna
  + stars: | 2023-11-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Job search website Adzuna said annual advertised salaries averaged 36,946 pounds ($46,038.41) last month, down 0.4% from September and taking the decline since April to 1.9%. "Falling advertised salaries may not appear to be good news for jobseekers but it does signal that the menace of inflation is finally in retreat," Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna said. However, online job ads climbed 0.35% to 1.03 million adverts, the biggest month-on-month jump since June, helped by pre-Christmas hiring in sectors such as retail and warehousing. But it is closely watching for signs of inflation pressure in the jobs market. An official measure of vacancies, published earlier this month, showed vacancies hit a two-year low of 957,000 in the three months to October and near record wage growth cooled slightly from in the quarter to September.

From prompt engineers to AI auditors, companies are seeking workers who can use the new tech. Advertisement"Professionals and employers alike are rapidly adopting AI and generative AI across a broad range of industries. "Prompt engineers are our hot take as the job for 2024," James Neave, Adzuna's head of data science told BI. There were seven adverts for prompt engineers in the UK active in October compared to none last year, according to Adzuna data shared with BI. Analysts at Adzuna also saw an increase in job listings for AI ethics officers, chief AI officers, AI auditors, AI trainers, and machine managers.

Many people subsequently turned to remote work, and the workforce recovered but only to be plunged into three years of an incredibly tight labor market. Today, the unemployment rate is at 3.9% following an increase in October from the prior’s month’s 3.8% level, and by most measures the labor market is considered very strong. “It does seem like the labor market is getting a little more balanced,” says Gene Tannuzzo, global head of fixed income at Columbia Threadneedle Investments. The overwhelmingly takeaway is that the labor market has defied most predictions and shown a level of resiliency and adaptability that has surprised many observers. This was the “excess retirements” who were causing the labor market to be exceptionally tight.

Online job adverts fell by 1.6% in September from August, bucking the usual end-of-summer bounce in job postings, and advertised salaries fell by the same amount, Adzuna said. "September traditionally sees a surge in job market activity but the figures we're seeing this year could signal a cooling off of the job market, which had shown signs of resilience earlier in the year," Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter said. The Office for National Statistics said earlier this month its measure of job vacancies fell to a two-year low of 988,000 in the three months to September. Separately on Monday, a survey showed small businesses recovering a bit of their lost confidence but the overall mood remained negative. Martin McTague, FSB's national chair, said the survey showed signs of stabilisation after 18 months of surging costs.

Selker said that because soft skills can be observed, they can be measured, even if somewhat subjectively. Measuring soft skills can then become more like evaluating hard skills. AdvertisementAdvertisement"It really is a shift in thinking then to say, 'Can we observe these soft skills?" The pandemic meant that many Gen Zers, as they started their careers, didn't get the face-to-face interactions at work that might have allowed them to further develop their soft skills.

Artificial intelligence chatbots can write corporate memos, compose new episodes of The Office in iambic pentameter and potentially land you a lucrative new job. Nearly three-quarters of CEOs call generative AI a "top investing priority," according to a recent survey conducted by KPMG, an international professional services network. They're spending on AI in the hopes of increased profitability, innovation and security for their companies, respondents said. More than half of the survey's participants said they're spending more money on new technology than training current employees. The average job posting involving generative AI skills offers a $138,232 salary, says a September report from job search platform Adzuna.

UK jobs market lost some of its heat in July - survey
  + stars: | 2023-08-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Britain's labour market is losing some of its inflationary heat with vacancies and advertised starting salaries falling in July for the first time this year, according to a survey published on Monday. Job search website Adzuna also said the number of job-seekers per vacancy rose slightly in July but the overall state of the labour market remained tight. The Bank of England is looking closely at the labour market as it considers how much further it needs to raise interest rates to smother high inflation. Adzuna said employers were becoming more secretive about pay rates as the labour market cooled with over half of adverts not disclosing salary details for the first time. The job market for tech workers remains strong, and especially so for those picking up emerging artificial intelligence skills. For comparison, India was hiring for 25,900 AI jobs and the UK was hiring for 16,825 roles involving the skill in June. But given the emerging and quickly developing nature of the tools, it can be tricky to display your expertise in a particular AI skill as a job candidate, Neave says. With that being said, Neave recommends interested job applicants build up their AI skills and stand out from the competition in three key ways:Stay on top of developments. "If you want to take it to the next level, you can fine-tune these large language models based on your proprietary business data," Neave says.

The U.S. is leading the way in artificial intelligence and generative AI jobs, according to data from the global job search platform Adzuna. Neave says generalist workers can build their AI skills, and boost their employability, in three steps:First, get to know the most popular AI tools. "Once you feel confident enough using it, seek out and find any way to use it in your day-to-day work," Neave says. It's a good idea to check with your manager about your company's policy on using AI in your work before doing so. And get a clear understanding of what you're allowed to input into generative AI tools and what you're not.

There were 7.6 million open jobs in the U.S. in June, according to the Adzuna database, with a growing share calling for AI skills: 169,045 jobs in the U.S. cited AI needs, and 3,575 called for generative AI work in particular. The average tax manager job that'll use AI pays $100,445 a year, according to Adzuna data. AI jobs have been around for decades but exploded in recent months as ChatGPT entered the scene in late 2022. Companies like EY explicitly listed AI as one of their top three hiring priorities, while Wells Fargo and Kaiser Permanente are implementing it across their workflows. Those interested in building their generative AI skills can look into certification and training courses online, from the University of Michigan, Coursera and other e-learning platforms.

Job ads citing generative AI increased to 1,496 in May compared to just over 100 in January. Corporate America has been keen to show it's on top of the AI trend. Job listings asking for generative AI skills are on the rise, a new analysis from job search engine Adzuna has found. Among these, ads citing generative AI grew to 1,496 as of May this year compared to 185 job listings in January, and just three in May 2022. In an early analysis, Goldman Sachs predicted Generative AI could lead to significant upheaval in the labor market, affecting around 300 million jobs globally.

Reuters similarly found no evidence of an “EU Citizenship Program” when searching online and via EU websites (archive.is/wip/6aeK2). Each Member State determines the criteria necessary for acquisition and loss of nationality, subject to EU law, the spokesperson said, and EU citizenship is granted automatically to citizens of EU countries (archive.is/MAsN2). “Third countries cannot grant EU citizenship, neither can private entities, such as companies,” the spokesperson said. Spokespeople for the EU Commission and the UK Home Office told Reuters that the advert is fake. There is also no centralized EU citizenship program, as claimed in the advert.
UK has 18% fewer jobs advertised online than a year ago: ONS

LONDON, April 14 (Reuters) - The number of jobs being advertised online in Britain on April 6 was 18% lower than a year earlier, though up 1% from the week before, according to weekly data from recruiter Adzuna released by Britain's Office for National Statistics. The ONS also said debit card spending at pubs, restaurants and fast food outlets was 17 percentage points higher than a week earlier, based on transaction data from Revolut, reflecting the Easter holiday weekend. As the trend toward pay transparency continues, companies across the nation are starting to include salary ranges in their job postings – but there are some industries and organizations that lead the pack. According to recent research from Adzuna, a job search engine, the best industries for pay transparency are charitable jobs and trade/construction jobs. Adzuna also found the worst industries for salary transparency – only 1% of job postings in the travel industry include pay ranges, and retail jobs ate the least transparent at 0.5%. Paul Lewis, chief marketing officer at Adzuna, says that the fallout from trends like the Great Resignation prompted these industries to increase salary transparency as a means to attract more workers. Based on Adzuna's findings, these are the 5 best companies for salary transparency as of November 2022:1.
However, the majority of states still haven't risen to the occasion, and as the call for pay transparency continues, job seekers have started taking matters into their own hands by rejecting offers. Furthermore, Adzuna found that job seekers wasted ample time applying for roles that ended up not meeting their salary goals. "Our survey showed that over the last five years alone, U.S. workers have wasted over 480 million hours applying for jobs with the wrong salary," says Paul Lewis, chief marketing officer at Adzuna. "Learn about the role first so you've got a good understanding of what should be on the table before stepping into that conversation about pay," Lewis explains. And that shouldn't be a difficult conversation," Lewis says.
A growing number of states and municipalities are enacting salary transparency laws, a stepping stone toward eliminating wage discrepancies based on gender, race and other unfair practices. Here are a few important ways the push for greater pay transparency will change the way employers think about job listings. Even without a law, expect pay transparency to become the normPay transparency laws have been proliferating across the country, with a growing number of states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland and Washington enacting some type of salary transparency law. New York City's salary transparency law, meanwhile — set to go into effect Nov. 1 — includes employers with four or more employees, provided at least one works within New York City. Some companies have opted not to recruit in certain states because of their salary transparency laws, explicitly excluding remote candidates who hail from these states in their job postings.
New York City's Wage Transparency Law goes into effect on Nov. 1, making it mandatory for employers to share the salary or hourly wage in postings. "We expect the recent wave of pay transparency legislation to continue," said Mariann Madden, director of work and rewards at benefits consulting firm WTW, formerly known as Willis Towers Watson. "Job seekers and current employees want to know and understand that they are treated fairly and are provided with equal opportunities to thrive and grow within the organization," Madden said. The idea is that pay transparency will bring about pay equity, or essentially equal pay for work of equal or comparable value, regardless of worker gender, race or other demographic category. "Employers may realize this transparency is important to job seekers and start including it anyway without a mandate," she said.
Workers are pushing for greater pay transparency, whether employers like it or not. Such conversations around income expectations used to be "the elephant in the room," said Vicki Salemi, career expert at Monster.com. Now, 33% of job seekers said they would not even go to a job interview without first knowing the salary the employer is willing to offer, according to new research by job search site Adzuna. Congress considers retirement system changesAs salary transparency laws slowly gain momentum, 28% of adults said a lack of pay clarity continues to be the greatest frustration when it comes to the job search, Adzuna found. The idea is that pay transparency will bring about pay equity, or essentially equal pay for work of equal or comparable value, regardless of worker gender, race or other demographic category.
Experts recommend making a few key adjustments to your job search during a downturn. Are you out of your mind to even consider quitting your job and looking for a new one right now? Set a strict schedule for how much time you spend on your job search each day. Expand your target list of employersIn a tight labor market, employers do what they can to widen their potential pool of qualified applicants. But the dynamics shift in an employer's market.
